Interview with Trish Keiller
Anthony Menard, the educator for over 25 years, is the principal at East Hartford Middle School in East Hartford, CT. Mr. Menard was awarded Outstanding First Year Principal in CT was also named CT Middle School Principal of the Year in 2017. A skillful instructional leader who models a growth mindset and maintains consistently high expectations for students, staff and, most of all, himself, Anthony was selected for his intrepid leadership in working with a broad network of stakeholders to bring about what he calls “dynamic, real and inspiring change.”
Mr. Menard joined the EHMS administration as an assistant principal in 2009 at a time when the school was struggling with low test scores, high suspension rates, lack of leadership stability, a divided staff, and a negative public perception. He worked with his fellow administrative team members and key school leaders to turnaround the failing school, achieving a dramatic reduction in suspensions and chronic absenteeism, a marked increase in average daily attendance and a radical shift in public opinion. While once parents were refusing to send their kids to EHMS, now the school has a waiting list for its sixth-grade program.
Anthony spent his early days in education as a high school guidance counsellor and boy’s high school basketball coach. He’s completed his formal education at Central Connecticut State University, in both Educational Leadership and Superintendency.
Anthony’s team approach supports his staff to create a culture that is self-reflective, relationship-driven, and process-oriented.
Anthony is also a husband and father to four children.
